Private Bookings: Hands-On Classes for groups of friends, family, and/or coworkers

We have hosted large family celebrations at Well Bread, staff Christmas parties, and smaller societies meetings that have included a lot or a little hands-on cooking. Do you have a group of friends looking to do something new together but still keep the environment private? We have a culinary experience to suit your needs and exceed your expectations. We’ve had bridal showers, family reunions, birthday parties, office Christmas parties, and many other events here.

We work to personalize your culinary experience in a way no other food facility in Whitehorse can. What’s better than making a family meal together and not having to clean your house, do any of the food prep or wash the dishes? Not much. Consider having your next family celebration with us so everyone can enjoy the experience with absolutely zero stress.

Right now we’re limited to 12 people for hands-on cooking but we can accommodate more than that provided your group meets the physical distancing rules for COVID-19 protection. Let’s talk about your event as I have many suggestions to make a fun experience happen.

Family Style or Individual?

Culinary classes may happen in either format. You choose the experience depending on the menu and your group.

The family-style class consists of guests pairing up to create a dish together that is then enjoyed by the entire group upon completion. This works well if two people are able to share a workstation without having to physically distance. An example of a family style class would be one table makes homemade pasta, the next table makes the sauce that goes on the pasta, a dessert item and any other dishes are made at the other tables, and so on. Depending on the menu, the work is divided among the guests and a complete meal is composed similar to how a family would prepare a multiple-dish meal at home. There is very little demonstration by the Chef at this style of class due to the volume and variety of dishes; however, Chef is right beside you (with a mask on) showing you how to prepare each dish and answering every question that arises. Guests are provided and required to follow recipes at a family-style class.

The individual-style class consists of each guest making the same dish at the same time, and then that dish is enjoyed by each person individually. This style works well for team building with coworkers who are still physically distancing from one another but want to have a common experience together. An example of an Individual style class is Pierogi. Each guest would make their own Pierogi and after several Pierogi are made, each guest cooks and eats their creations at their own stations. This experience happens at the same with all the guests cooking and eating together while still maintaining a safe physical distance from one another. There is a demonstration of each dish by the Chef which then each guest repeats those tasks at their own work station. This style works well for cooks with less experience or ones who prefer to watch and copy a demonstration. Most baking classes would be held in the Individual style class setting.

Corporate/Government Experiential Events (Team Building/Staff Development)

Have your previous team-building experiences been more reminiscent of a group of strangers struggling to make small talk while doing an activity none of you have in common? Then a culinary team-building experience is what your group needs because eating is the common experience that unites everyone on our planet. We have dozens of happy guests who are glad to provide testimonials on how “breaking bread” with each other has transformed their workgroup dynamic. And that happened through one culinary team building class with Chef Cat. Does your group need a bonding experience outside your workplace? Then choose your experience from the Tier pricing below and let’s get started.

For the best team building/staff development experience, we suggest you choose a family-style event (Tier 2 or Tier 3 class). All the members of your group work collectively to produce multiple dishes that create a full meal. Upon completion, the meal is eaten together. The team shares a common experience that is akin to a large family gathering; competitive sibling rivalry and embarrassing stories are often enjoyed by all!

You are welcome to add your own activities or include a staff meeting as part of your event. We work with you to tailor your event and help you accomplish your personnel goals.

In late spring, summer, and fall, Chef Cat includes urban foraging as part of the team-building experience and sends her guests on adventures for edible flowers, herbs, and vegetables either from her on-site gardens or the nearby wilderness areas.

What is included in the price?

All food, two alcoholic drinks (wine or beer) and unlimited non-alcoholic drinks (juice/soda water), recipes, equipment/aprons to use during your class, exclusive use of the facility and garden, and one-on-one chef instruction. You are required to bring your own mask if you choose to wear one. We typically aim to make multiple dishes during a team-building class unless there is a specific culinary goal such as cabbage rolls, pasta, or baking bread, for example.

Private classes tend to run over the regular 2 – 2 1/2 hour class time and that’s okay with us; however, we ask that your group finish up within the timeline you’ll receive on your booking email (usually 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 hours maximum). Do you need to condense the time or want your event to last a little longer? No problem. We’ll arrange an event to suit your needs and work within your budget to give you the best culinary experience possible within your budget and timeline.

Would you like to include your own team-building exercises within our team building class? No problem. Let us know what your plans are and we will incorporate them into your event. You may also rent the facility for the entire day and have several culinary hands-on experiences between your own staff development activities*.

Our facility and garden are fully licensed. We are pleased to provide you with wine, beer, and cocktail pairings during your team building event*.

We have three pricing Tiers for our classes:

Tier 1: $115+gst per person Class Examples – Introductory Pasta, Quick Breads (Crepes), most introductory kids cooking classes. For example: in an introductory pasta class you can expect to make handmade pasta dough, hand roll, cut, and prepare the fresh pasta with one or two sauce choices then eat your creation or pack it up in a compostable container and take it home. At this class, everyone would work independently to create their own pasta while working side-by-side in a communal kitchen experience (adhering to all physical distancing rules). This type of class typically takes about 2 1/2 hours to complete. We’re able to condense the class into 1 1/2 hours if needed and Chef Cat will suggest culinary activities that are tailored to you.

Tier 2: $125+gst per person Class Examples – Most Cooking and Baking fall into this Tier level: filled Pasta, Pierogi,  Cabbage Rolls, Cocktails & Appetizers, and most Ethnic Cuisine classes. For example, you can expect to make Tom Yum Soup and Pad Thai at the Thai Class; Curry with Rice or Naan and Pakora at the Indian Class; Pierogies OR cabbage rolls at the Ukrainian/Polish Class; Korean Fried Chicken OR Bibimbap and Udon Noodle Stirfry at the Korean Class; Handmade Tortilla  Tacos with pickles, fresh Pico and Guacamole at the Mexican Class. We travel the world in our culinary classes and no country or content is off limits! If you choose the Family Style class your group will collectively prepare 1-2 entree dishes with sides and then eat the foods together at the end of class (ethnic cuisine classes work well family style). If you choose an Individual style class then everyone would make (for example) Pad Thai and then make Tom Yum.  Classes typically take 2 1/2 – 3 hours. Those dishes are for example only, let’s make what you want to eat!

Tier 3: $135 and up + gst and service fee per person Class Examples – Meat focused classes, Seafood and Advanced Pastry. For example: at a meat-focused Individual style class you can expect to learn how to break down a whole chicken or fish, prepare the meat with a side dish and enjoy your creation at the same time as the other guests. A family-style class would involve more than 2 dishes being made so the workload can be spread among all the guests. This class takes typically takes a bit more time and can last 3 – 3 1/2 hours. Again, it’s up to you and what experience you want for your group!

15% service charge is added to every private booking to cover the additional costs associated with customizing your event.

All private bookings are based on a minimum charge of 6 persons (temporary policy during COVID-19 pandemic to maintain physical distancing requirements), you may have less or up to 12 people hands-on (provided the people standing side by side do not have to physically-distance from each other; otherwise, masks will be required).

Just want to eat and watch us cook? Choose a Chef Table Culinary experience – TEMPORARILY SUSPENDED DUE TO COVID-19 PRECAUTIONS FOR MORE THAN 6 GUESTS

We have introduced Seat & Eat culinary experiences to our repertoire of culinary events. These events involve minimal hands-on participation from the guests. Your guests can choose, or not, to make smaller contributions to the meal; like peel carrots, grind spices, or make a cocktail for example. Perfect if the guests plan to dress up for the culinary event and are more interested in eating than in cooking.

The Chef will prepare your meal and the guests are encouraged to ask questions about the preparation of the food. We often have home cooks roll up their sleeves and help us prepare your meal together. It’s a relaxed and engaging event perfect for holiday parties, family celebrations, and other larger events. Chef Cat always shares her recipes and techniques as she believes all great Chefs should. Contact us for per person pricing for this type of event.

Designer Food Events

We will work with you to design a food & pairings event that suits the needs of your group. Pricing is based on the number of guests, duration, and menu. Our facility can host 24 persons seated (only if those people are able to be seated next to each other and do not require to be physically distanced). In the summer, our garden is available for guests to enjoy as well (maximum capacity of 50 people inside and out).

Do you have an idea for a food event that doesn’t fit into one of our class categories? Great! Please contact us to discuss how we can make that event happen for you. Send an email to chef@wellbread.ca
